Private copy extended to new uses of copy (USB drives, memory cards and external hard drives)

At its meeting of 9 July 2007, the Private Copy Commission chaired by Tristan d’Albis confirmed the levies it had adopted on 18 June 2007 concerning USB drives, memory cards, external hard drives, and the decrease in the levy for blank DVDs.

The levy applicable for example for a 1GB USB drive was set at 23 eurocents (€0.23), and that of a memory card of the same capacity at 9 eurocents (€0.09). For external hard drives, the applicable levy will be for example €6.45 for 160Gb external hard drives and €10 for 500Gb external hard drives. The amount of the levy for blank DVDs is lowered (10 eurocents).

These different decisions were made with the support of two consumer organizations, UNAF (Union Nationale des Associations Familiales) and ASSECO-CFDT (Association Nationale de Consommateurs Agréée).
