On 3 July 1985, a private copy levy was instituted by law for the benefit of authors, performing artists and producers for their works and performances reproduced on phonograms or videograms. This levy is collected from manufacturers and importers of blank recording media used for the reproduction of phonograms and videograms.
SORECOP, for audio private copying, and COPIE FRANCE, for audiovisual private copying, were then founded to collect and distribute this levy, thereby signalling the union of authors, performing artists and producers in this area.
SORECOP (Société pour la rémunération de la copie privée sonore): collects and distributes to its member societies representing the various categories of rights holders in audio recording.
COPIE FRANCE (Société pour la rémunération de la copie privée audiovisuelle): collects and distributes to its member societies representing the various categories of rights holders in audiovisual recording.
